Gendarmenmarkt: Europe's most beautiful square now shining brighter than ever
- Berlin's top sightseeing attraction more accessible, sustainable and modern than ever before

Berlin, 14 March 2025 Berlin's jewel is back: Gendarmenmarkt, considered one of the most beautiful squares in the city and even Europe, shines in new splendour after two years of renovation and further development. In the heart of the German capital, the square with the German Cathedral, French Cathedral and the Konzerthaus in the centre once again offers the impressive panorama that has always fascinated visitors from all over the world. Since the grand opening on 13 March 2025, the ensemble has been more accessible and sustainable than ever before.
A must-see for every visit to Berlin
Whether concerts in the traditional concert hall, a visit to the magnificent cathedrals or popular events such as the Classic Open Air and the Christmas market - the Gendarmenmarkt attracts around three million tourists every year. As a must-see, this special Berlin landmark combines history, culture and lifestyle in a unique atmosphere.

Historic beauty meets modern infrastructure
More than 14,000 square metres of paving that has been renovated in keeping with its listed status, a modern five-kilometre-long supply network and innovative rainwater management make the square future-proof, sustainable and, for the first time, completely barrier-free. Thanks to an innovative rainwater management system, around 5,500 cubic metres of water can be stored and seep directly into the ground beneath the Gendarmenmarkt. Japanese trees were planted on the edge of the Gendarmenmarkt, which are particularly heat-resistant and provide shade.
