Earth Hour 2026: Berlin’s hotels are switching off their lights for an hour

  • The global climate action initiative “Earth Hour” will also take place in Berlin on 28 March
  • visitBerlin partner hotels are taking part between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm
  • Main event at the Brandenburg Gate

Berlin, 25 March 2026 When the lights are switched off worldwide on Saturday, 28 March, for ‘Earth Hour’, numerous visitBerlin partner hotels will also be taking part in the WWF’s well-known campaign. Between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm, they will symbolically switch off the lights or reduce lighting in lobbies, bars and other public areas of their premises. From three-star hotels to upmarket establishments, the hotels are using this to draw attention to climate protection and demonstrate their commitment to energy efficiency.

The main “Earth Hour” event in Berlin will take place at the Brandenburg Gate. The lights will be switched off here at 8.30 pm. The Red Town Hall, Britz Palace and the town halls in Neukölln, Köpenick and Treptow are also taking part.

“Earth Hour highlights the fact that many hotels in Berlin are actively addressing the issue of climate protection,” says Conny Doß, spokesperson for the participating partner hotels. “As well as its symbolic significance, the main focus is on raising awareness among guests and staff at the hotels.”
visitBerlin also welcomes the initiative: “I am delighted by the commitment of our partner hotels to Earth Hour. The initiative sends an important signal and helps to draw attention to the issues of sustainability and climate protection. The tourism industry in particular relies on intact habitats – which makes it all the more important to keep raising awareness of the issue and to take joint responsibility. Together with our partners in the city, we are working on numerous projects to further promote sustainable development and make Berlin’s tourism industry fit for the future,” says visitBerlin’s CEO, Sabine Wendt

‘Earth Hour’ initiatives in Berlin’s hotels
The participating hotels are marking ‘Earth Hour’ in different ways: establishments such as The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin, Hotel Berlin, Berlin and the Park Inn by Radisson Berlin Alexanderplatz are dimming their lights, informing their guests about the initiative and inviting them to take part in their rooms as well. At the Scandic Hotel Potsdamer Platz and the Park Plaza Berlin, special “Earth Hour” drinks and cocktails at the bars add an extra touch. The MOA Berlin creates a special atmosphere with dimmed lighting in the restaurant and a completely darkened atrium, accompanied by a specially created “Earth Hour” drink at the bar.

The Hotel Oderberger is staging the event with LED candles and reduced lighting, combining this with a long-term commitment: through the “Hotels for Trees” initiative, one tree is planted for every room booking. The Three Little Pigs Hostel is demonstrating, with a power-free “Unplugged” lounge, how a stay can be consciously organised without electricity, for example by playing board games together.

Commitment beyond ‘Earth Hour’
Many of the participating hotels are constantly working to reduce their energy and resource consumption, for example through more efficient lighting, optimised operational processes or adjustments to their catering services. As part of the “Green Pillow” working group, the hotels pool such measures and share best practices. In addition, some hotels are involved in initiatives such as the “Sustainable Berlin” certification programme, Clean-up Day or projects in the field of renewable energy. Through visitBerlin’s TourismusHub e-learning platform, the industry is furthering its training in areas including climate protection. In this way, Berlin’s hotel industry is demonstrating how climate protection is becoming increasingly embedded in day-to-day operations.
