Insight into Bowie's wide-ranging work will be complemented by unreleased pieces from Bowie's private collections. David Bowie has described his time in Berlin as the "happiest time of my life". For its stop in Berlin, the exhibition has been especially expanded with features on Bowie's musical work in Berlin.
"The David Bowie exhibition is a major highlight for Berlin," says Burkhard Kieker, visitBerlin CEO. "The retrospective is all the more exciting because David Bowie and Berlin are bound by a very special relationship."
Bowie's Berlin years from 1976 to 1978 were Bowie's musically most productive period, when the albums of the so-called Berlin triptych rewrote music history. The creative phase was inspired both by the Berlin subculture of the seventies as well as well as the city's rich cultural past. While in Berlin, Bowie tried out various avant-garde personalities where life and art merged into something novel. The extent of Berlin's influence on Bowie is reflected in the famous lyrics of the song "Heroes", about two lovers who kiss at a wall. More information about the exhibition can be found at visitBerlin.com and at davidbowie-berlin.de.
The exhibition was curated by London's Victoria and Albert Museum. It was a complete sell-out there, with more than 300,000 visitors.
