Berlin with a good start into the New Year
Berlin, 15 March 2012 International trade fairs, such as the Berlin Fashion Week and the Green Week, secured a new visitor record for Berlin. Double-digit growth for the beginning of the year: 639,523 guests travelled to the German capital in January (+ 13.5%). They spend 1,359,147 nights in Berlin – this corresponds to an 11.4% growth versus the comparable prior year period. This was communicated today by the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office.
With a 14% rise, a particularly large number of German guests came to the capital. They generated 839,138 room nights (+11.9%).
Germany’s neighbouring countries are marked by an up-trend: due to the better motorway connection, visitors from Poland (+41% room nights) were leading the field by far. A particularly high number of guests was also welcomed to Berlin from Belgium (+23.6 % room nights), France (+21.1%), Denmark (+16.4%), Austria (+14.9%) and Switzerland (+12%).
Significant increases were, moreover, reported for the Arab Gulf States (+107.9%), India (+37.5%) and Russia (+28.2%).
In January, 758 accommodation providers made available 121,088 beds to visitors to Berlin. The average duration of stay of the Berlin visitors amounted to 2.1 days.
