Berlin tourism with best July ever

Berlin, 10 September 2012 Berlin city trip instead of beach holiday: The summer month of July has brought Berlin tourism a new visitor record. Around 998,600 guests (+10.6 percent) spent around 2.5 million nights in the German capital (+12.8 percent). According to the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office these are the highest numbers since the beginning of the accommodation statistics.

Almost 50 percent international guests

The share of international guests increased in Berlin in July. Whilst the distribution between German and foreign room nights was in 2011 on average 58.6 to 41.4 percent, Berlin came close to the fifty-fifty mark in July: 52.5 percent room nights were recorded from Germany and 47.5 percent from abroad. Overall, 438,700 guests came from abroad (+ 15.1 percent) in July and spent a total of 1,183,664 nights (+ 16.5 percent) in Berlin. The most important source markets for the German capital were in July the United Kingdom with 41,532 visitors (+ 19.8 percent), closely followed by the USA with 39,201 visitors (+ 24.1 percent) and Denmark with 32,840 visitors (+ 26.2 percent).

Strong demand from guests from Asia

The Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office also reports a rise in guests from Asia: Berlin welcomed in July more visitors from Japan (+ 51.3 percent), Korea (+ 43.9 percent) and China (+ 34 percent).

In July 783 accommodation providers were available with 125,000 (+ 3.4 percent) beds for tourists and business travelers. The average length of stay amounted to 2.5 days.
