Facts about Berlin Freedom Week & Conference

BERLIN FREEDOM WEEK (November 8–15, 2025)

  • New citywide initiative for freedom and democracy
  • Starting point is the General Assembly of the World LibertyCongress (an association of around 200 dissidents and democracy activists from over 50 autocratically ruled countries), which will take place on November 8 and 9 in the Berlin House of Representatives.
  • With this initiative, Berlin, the city of freedom, is taking a stand against the growing power of autocratic regimes and creating a platform for exchange, new perspectives, and ideas for strengthening freedom and democracy worldwide.
  • More than 130 events at over 80 locations in Berlin, including conferences and dialog formats, cultural events, film screenings, workshops, guided tours, etc.
  • The events facilitate exchange with actors from politics, business, science, culture, the media, and freedom fighters from all over the world.
  • Many Berlin Freedom Week events are free and open to the public. Some events require prior registration.
  • The central conference of Berlin Freedom Week is the Berlin Freedom Conference on November 10 at the Gasometer on the EUREF campus with participants from politics, business, science, civil society, and the media. The goal: to develop new solutions for strengthening freedom and democracy worldwide.

BERLIN FREEDOM CONFERENCE (10 November 2025, Gasometer on the EUREF Campus)

  • The highlight of Berlin Freedom Week is the Berlin Freedom Conference on November 10 at the Gasometer on the EUREF-Campus.
  • Background: The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, as a symbol of the triumph of democracy over authoritarian rule. Berlin, the city of freedom, is the stage for today's freedom fighters.
  • More than 60 voices from German and international politics, business, science, civil society, and the media will be speaking at the event.
  • Topics: The role of business and global cooperation; defense; the connection between freedom and technology, media, and artificial intelligence; the importance of art for freedom, and much more.
  • “Ignite Talks” format: five-minute, pointed short presentations on “Freedom Ideas” covering new perspectives, initiatives, and practical solutions.
  • Goal: to build networks, exchange successful ideas, and develop new solutions for strengthening freedom and democracy worldwide.

     

  • International speaker highlights:
  • Masih Alinejad (Iranian women's rights activist and president of the World Liberty Congress)
  • Garry Kasparov (world chess champion, Chairperson of the Renew Democracy Foundation and outspoken critic of Putin)
  • Leopoldo López (Venezuelan opposition leader and co-founder of the World Liberty Congress)
  • Oleksandra Matviichuk und Maria Corina Machado (both Nobel Peace Prize laureates, with Machado joining virtually)
  • Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Ben Hodges (former Commanding General of the US Army in Europe)
  • Tsai Ing-wen (former President of Taiwan)
  • Audrey Tang (Taiwan's digital ambassador)
