Climate Roadmap for Berlin Tourism
Why a climate roadmap?
Tourism companies have the potential to actively influence climate change and mitigate its consequences. With their reach and innovative strength, they can provide decisive impetus to drive forward sustainable solutions and positively shape the future of the industry. However, the current references to tourism in the BEK (Berlin Energy & Climate Protection Programme) are not sufficient to provide companies in the tourism and MICE industry with guidance on which measures are most effective.
We need a clear goal and a plan for strategic and holistic climate management, which is why the Berlin Senate is funding visitBerlin to develop a climate roadmap for Berlin tourism and the MICE industry in a participatory process by the end of 2025.
The climate roadmap will serve as a strategic guide for the tourism and event industry, provide orientation for companies and show concrete ways in which the industry can contribute to Berlin's climate neutrality by 2045.
visitBerlin is supported in this project by:
BTE Tourismus- und Regionalberatung

Professor Dr Stefan Gössling, climate change and tourism expert
Key elements of the project

The climate roadmap will be based on a comprehensive analysis of the emissions currently caused by Berlin tourism and MICE activities, taking into account all aspects of the tourism and event business.
We take a close look at everything from travel and accommodation to on-site activities and event planning and identify potential for CO2 reduction and optimisation. The aim is to increase the positive effects of tourism, reduce the negative ones and at the same time prepare the industry for changes in climatic conditions.
Key components of the climate roadmap:
- Assessment of current emissions from Berlin tourism and the MICE industry
- Analysing the need for action and strategies for climate-resilient development in Berlin tourism
- Concretisation of necessary climate protection measures
- Implementation of measures, monitoring and continuous adaptation of measures
How can my company participate?

The first stakeholder workshop on the climate roadmap took place in May 2025. After various climate protection scenarios were outlined in this workshop and initial sector-specific requirements for the climate roadmap were outlined in sector-specific breakout sessions, the project is now entering the detailed phase.
Important: Various stakeholders from Berlin's visitor economy can still get involved in this phase, even if they did not take part in the previous workshop. We need your experience to actively develop industry-specific, realistic climate protection and climate adaptation measures!
Because we don't just want to deal with the topic superficially, the upcoming workshops will focus on the needs of your sector for half a day.
