The gallery C/O Berlin opens in Amerika Haus
Berlin, 29 October 2014 Berlin's famous photo gallery C/O Berlin opens its new exhibition spaces at Amerika Haus on Thursday, October 30. Works from the Magnum Agency’s Will McBride and Luise Schröder will be on display. Visitors can also be photographed in the style of various Magnum photographers using a photo machine in the section ‘Picture Yourself’.
Burkhard Kieker, CEO of visitBerlin: ‘It is great that C/O Berlin is back. As one of the most important photo galleries of the world it has been missing in the city. With the C/O the cultural scene in City West is receiving a new heavyweight.’
In 2013 C/O Berlin had to move from its former home, the Old Post Office in Berlin-Mitte. After completion of the renovation phase of Amerika Haus, built in 1957, which once served as an information and cultural centre for the USA, there is now more than 2,000 square meters of exhibition space. The renovation of the building on Hardenbergstraße 22-24, which was paid for by the city of Berlin, involved meeting numerous requirements because of monument protection laws.
The C/O Berlin is complemented by the adjacent C/O Education, where as of 2015 photography courses for children, youth, and adults will be offered. For more information: co-berlin.org
The centrepiece of the reopening exhibition is the contact sheets created by renowned photographers of the Magnum Agency, including Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa. These prints are particularly interesting because visitors can receive an insight into less successful photographs of the renowned photographers, and can gain an idea of their decision criteria. The early Berlin photography of Will McBride is in the Oberlichtsaal under the title ‘I was in love with this city’. McBride was also the first photographer to have exhibited at Amerika Haus.
