Decline in domestic tourism due to late Easter holidays

Tourism numbers remain on a high level in March

Berlin, 10 May 2011 With around 729,000 guests and more than 1.6 million room nights the visitor numbers of the German capital remain on a high level in March 2011. This has been announced today by the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office.

A positive development can be recorded for visitors from abroad: their number increased compared to the same prior year month by 2.4 percent (0.4% for room nights). Guests from the United Kingdom, Italy and the USA were the leaders among international tourists in absolute numbers. By contrast, domestic tourism dropped by 1.6 percent in terms of visitors and 4.8 percent for room nights.

Burkhard Kieker, CEO of visitBerlin: “The decline in visitors from Germany is attributable to the fact that Easter was later this year, so that the Easter holidays started all over Germany in April.“

Berlin visitors spent on average 2.2 days in the city on the river Spree. Altogether 116,200 beds (+5.6%) were made available to them by around 755 Berlin accommodation providers (+3.1%).
