  • New and resumed routes connect Berlin non-stop with New York City and Washington D.C. from the end of May
  • Overnight stay statistics: In January and February 2023, the USA ranked as the strongest overseas market

Berlin, 20 April 2023 In cooperation with United Airlines, visitBerlin is promoting a visit to the German capital at two media events in Denver and New York this week. The spotlight is on the highlights of art and culture that will be showcased in Berlin this year. The new or resumed flight connections between Berlin and New York City and Washington D.C. are also being promoted.

Spotlight on art and culture

The trip will place special emphasis on art and cultural highlights, and Berlin has a wealth of these to offer this year. The Norwegian painter Edvard Munch will be featured twice. The Berlinische Galerie will present "Edvard Munch. Magic of the North" from 15 September 2023 to 22 January 2024, highlighting Munch's time in Berlin, where he lived on and off between 1892 and 1907. The Barberini Museum in Potsdam will take a closer look at Munch's landscapes and his interaction with nature with "Edvard Munch: Trembling Earth" from 18 November 2023 to 1 April 2024. The exhibition on Caspar David Friedrich in the Alte Nationalgalerie next year is also heralded.

Resumed and new flight connections

From 25 May, two additional non-stop flights will be connecting the USA with Berlin. Firstly, there will be the new daily Washington Dulles - Berlin service operated by United Airlines. In parallel, Delta Airlines will resume the direct connection between New York JFK and Berlin, also a daily service, last operated by the airline in 2019.

The standing of the USA as one of Berlin's most important foreign markets

The importance of the USA as Berlin's most important overseas market is again evident right at the beginning of this year. From January to February, around 36,000 guests from the USA travelled to Berlin, spending more than 98,000 nights in the city's hotels. The number of overnight stays thus increased by 130 per cent as compared to the same period last year and reached about 83 per cent of the pre-crisis level. The USA ranked first among non-European countries in the first two months of the year, coming in fourth overall in international comparisons.

New consumer campaign planned for summer

For the summer months, visitBerlin is planning a new USA-wide campaign with social media and video ads as well as digital outdoor advertising. The campaign aims to further establish Berlin as a travel destination for overseas guests and its own website visitBerlin.de as the primary source of information on Berlin tourism.

Convention marketing in the USA: Berlin in high demand among North American event planners

The USA represents a key overseas market for Berlin's meetings and conventions business as well. Since the year 2022, visitBerlin's Berlin Convention Office has been working with the "MICE Acquisition Taskforce" to solicit more events for the German capital. Other market activities on the agenda include participation in events such as SMU International, a business workshop for targeted customer acquisition in New York City in March, and a trade fair appearance at IMEX Las Vegas in October, which is the most important industry event for the North American market.

The marketing efforts seem to be paying off: In a random survey of North American event organisers by the Berlin Convention Office, 60 per cent said they would consider Berlin for a conference, event or incentive trip in the future. The German capital wins people over with its history and culture, its international spirit, its diverse locations and its good price-performance ratio.
