Berlin, 5 March 2024 The wait for Germany's major sporting event of the year is entering its hottest phase: 100 days from tomorrow, on 14 June, UEFA EURO 2024 kicks off with the opening match in Munich. Two days earlier, the big opening concert will take place in the fan zone in the heart of Berlin. And then four weeks will begin in which the whole city will be dominated by King Football. Berlin's Olympic Stadium will host five matches and the final of the 2024 European Football Championships.
The whole of Berlin benefits from the championship
The capital can expect an enormous economic boost from the UEFA EURO 2024. A total value creation of at least 90 million euros is expected. And of course, many visitors will not only come to the city for the football, but will also use the trip for sightseeing, shopping or a cultural programme.
Burkhard Kieker, CEO of visitBerlin, is looking forward to welcoming visitors from all over the world: "What could be better for a city than for us to open our doors and arms and say: Welcome, Europe, to the biggest football spectacle of the year! We are setting up the world's biggest football goal in front of the Brandenburg Gate. We're not rolling out the red carpet for all football fans, but the green pitch."
Fans from all over the world meet in the capital
Berlin is expecting a total of around 2.5 million football fans over the course of the tournament, including around 1.9 million visitors from around 120 countries. There has already been a considerable increase in advance bookings for air travel to UEFA. And hoteliers are already satisfied: Hotel room rates are pointing for a price increase. While the average rate in March 2024 is currently 181 euros, it will rise to 253 euros in June.
The traditional Olympic Stadium in the West End will be the venue for six games, with the final on 14 July as the highlight. And even outside the arena, there will be no getting away from football during the tournament. At the big Fan Festival on Straße des 17. Juni, a special lawn will be laid out, and the Brandenburg Gate will be the world's biggest football goal for four weeks. All matches from the Olympic Stadium will be broadcast there, as well as all games with German participation and the quarter and semi-finals. Up to 130,000 spectators are expected per match. In the fan zone on Platz der Republik in front of the Reichstag, football fans can even watch all 51 UEFA EURO 2024 matches live at the public viewing area. There will also be the world's largest fan bar and a large cultural programme, installations and art events on two stages. Of course, there are also numerous small and large public viewing offers in the rest of the city.
For trade visitors at ITB: Photo spot with the trophy
Of course, only the winners of the final match on 14 July will be allowed to hold the real trophy in their hands. But anyone who would like to take a photo with the trophy will have the opportunity to do so at the ITB International Tourism Exchange from 5 to 7 March. The "Giant Trophy", an oversized replica, stands at the southern entrance to the exhibition centre and offers tourism professionals an unusual photo opportunity, and not just for football fans.
