Berlin, February 2021

Berlin is popular and was in the league of metropolises with more than 30 million overnight stays in 2019 with over 34 million overnight stays by around 14 million visitors in hotels and guesthouses. This puts Berlin as a destination in third place in Europe after London and Paris. According to initial projections, Berlin was able to maintain this position in 2020 despite a decline in visitors of around two thirds from the previous year. The European City Marketing Benchmarking Report ranks Berlin third for 2020 (12 million overnight stays) after London (21 million) and Paris (14 million). Thanks to strong domestic tourism, the number of visitors reached 4.9 million, 35 per cent of the pre-crisis year.

According to the market research tool Visitor Insight, tourist attractions attracted about 40 per cent of the visitors, museums and sightseeing providers about 30 per cent of the visitors of the previous year. The club scene, stages as well as the entire MICE industry had to record the strongest losses.
