Concept for modern, sustainable and city-compatible tourism in Berlin

With its sustainable and city-friendly tourism concept 2018+, Berlin has taken a close look at the impact of tourism on the city. Berlin was one of the first destinations to recognise that tourism development must be strategically planned – with a view to both visitors to the city and Berliners themselves.

Since then, the Tourism Concept 2018+ has formed the strategic framework for numerous measures implemented by Berlin Tourism and visitBerlin.

Our underlying study on the Berlin Tourism Plan 2018+

visitBerlin commissioned a study in 2017 (only available in German), which is the basis for the new Sustainable and City-Compatible Berlin Tourism Plan 2018+ of the state of Berlin. This study was prepared by dwif-Consulting GmbH and Humboldt-Innovation GmbH on the basis of the latest scientific findings.

visitBerlin advised: visitBerlins expertise in international tourism and congress marketing and the HIER IN BERLIN project as well as experience gained through exchanges with other destinations have been incorporated.

Further development in Berlin tourism

Quality tourism & target group development
The State of Berlin's Tourism Concept 2018+ stipulates that Berlin wants to increase its share of quality tourism. As there was initially no uniform definition of "quality tourism", various events were held with tourism partners and industry representatives to discuss what quality tourism means for Berlin.

These findings – supplemented by scientific analyses and data – were used to develop an initial scientific definition for Berlin. Details here.

In order to increase the share of quality tourism, this definition must also be applied in Berlin's marketing, especially when addressing suitable target groups. These were developed in an extensive process based on market research data and focus group analyses.

Climate roadmap for Berlin tourism
Building on the goals of the 2018+ tourism concept, a climate roadmap has been developed for Berlin tourism. It serves as a strategic guide for the tourism and events industry and outlines concrete ways in which the industry can contribute to Berlin's climate neutrality by 2045 at the latest. 

Together with partners from the visitor economy and with funding from the Berlin Senate, visitBerlin has steered the process of developing a plan for climate-resilient development in Berlin tourism and the convention industry.
