Successful growth
Berlin achieved a new record of 12.7 million visitors with over 31 million overnight stays.

In 2016, visitberlin was active in 50 countries across the globe. We promoted Berlin, Germany’s capital city, at over 280 events and in presentations for representatives of the tourism and convention industry, in the media and for potential visitors.

In 2016, the ibtm world attracted approx. 5,000 exhibitors from over 100 countries. At this leading trade fair, our Berlin Convention Office presented its new service portfolio for meetings and congress organisers.

The United States remains Berlin’s most important and strongest overseas market. Ranked second for international overnight stays in Berlin, this market has considerable potential for the meetings and conventions sector. In 2106, the Berlin Convention Office promoted the city with its own stand at IMEX America in Las Vegas.
Despite security concerns and changing travel trends, the United States remains Berlin’s most important and strongest overseas market. Berlin was again the top destination for Americans visiting Germany in 2016, a year when the strengthening dollar fuelled outbound tourism from the United States.

The United Kingdom is one of the leading international markets for meetings and conventions in Berlin. In 2016, 5% of participants at events in Berlin came from the UK. For this market, the visitBerlin Berlin Convention Office works closely with a major travel trade publisher to present UK customers with the latest trends in Berlin.

In 2016, around 80% of all participants attending meetings, congresses and incentives in Berlin came from Germany. With various new event formats, our Berlin Convention Office was able to attract new customers to Germany’s capital city. Customers were invited, for example, to Berlin for con| temporary weekends, while a Berlin start-up thrilled delegates at Frankfurt’s IMEX with its offer of virtual tours of the German capital.

In Brussels, the de facto capital of the EU, those European Convention Offices which are members of European Cities Marketing joined forces for the 2016 “Meet Europe” workshop. Asian countries account for a growing share of delegates and visitors at meetings and conventions in Berlin. In this context, the visitBerlin Berlin Convention Office has also continued its market activities in India in 2016, arranging promotional campaigns in cooperation with the European Cities Marketing (ECM) association.
